Newest Issue of Art Doll Quarterly...

I hope you will take a moment to look at the newest issue of ADQ...

I had the joy of having an article that I submitted published:

Folk Art with a Function...

I made the decision to add several washes of acrylic paint

to the head and then use a one step crackle medium.

(I'm hooked on that stuff...)

And a clock it is!   a.k.a. "functional" folk art!

I purchased a quartz movement clock kit that

I will attach to a wonderful old clock face 

that Katie and I found at a local flea market.

  

Aesop's Satyr is SLOWLY Coming Together!

His arms are just pinned in place, as I work on 

painting him.  I used some thinned down 

burnt umber for a base-coat and then added

a bit of blush around his face.

I will begin to layer translucent coats of

color to his head, neck, upper body, legs and hands...

I want to build up the color... and when he

says; "I'm done..."  then I'll be done!  Daryle 

Aesop's Satyr Has Hands!

His hands are sculpted with paper clay

and wrapped florist's wire... then glued

to the wooden upper arm craft finials.

"Phaeton" #2... The Long Journey Home!

The journey continues... 

Using the two remaining spoke rimmed 

doll buggy wheels, a wood block,

and some wooden finials... 

"Phaeton" (wagon) #2 is in the works!

The styrofoam balls and vintage enamel funnels

will be incorporated into the new doll.

"Sufficient Phaeton" is Finished!

Looking back over the past few weeks... 

I marvel at the inspiration that

an old vintage planer 

and a long forgotten poem

can muster up!

Details... Details... Details!

Details really do make a difference!

I just finished assembling

"Sufficient Phaeton"... realizing

there were a multitude of details

that made this doll so challenging!

From coffee-dying the canvas

and adding cinnamon and cloves...

to choosing just the right

 vintage bone buttons...

to incorporating a rusty, flattened bottle cap...
and then coffee-staining the poem and cord!

The inspiration for this newest art doll

comes from one of Emily Dickinson's poems!

This raggle-taggle rider is made from 

paperclay, canvas duck cloth and wood.
He wears a small, vintage oil can on his head.

He will eventually have articulated arms and legs...

A paperclay head (to cover this styrofoam ball)

 and paperclay hands are in the works!

I will post the poem that inspired him in a day or so...

A New Art Doll in the Works!

The inspiration for a new art doll 

is found right here...

in these wonderful, wacky, rusty wheels 

and a well worn, vintage wood planer!

I envision a rider... 

and so a new "road trip of creativity" begins!

"Verus North"

True North is is certainly tall and stately!

She is just under 24 inches high... 

I finished her this weekend.

She is holds the vintage child's compass that 

Katie and I found some time ago, at a flea market.

Her hand is somewhat out-stretched and her

gaze, slightly upward... looking for direction?

"Verus North"... True North!

The coffee stained maps and letters are

rolled tightly, and carried by her side.

She is a seeker!

"Verus North"... True North

I found a delightful old children's compass at our local Cowtown flea market several weeks ago.  It immediately brought to mind the lyrics from Twila Paris' song: "True North."  The lyrics read, in part:

There’s a strong steady light 

that is guiding us home 

In the lingering night 
we were never alone...

We need an absolute compass

now more than ever before... 

True North 

And so, the journey begins as I start working on a new folk art doll... She will be holding that compass... a seeker of "Verus North!"

Meet the Boys: "Souls of Joy!"

I finished the "souls" this weekend!  Their little bodies are covered with vintage German sheet music that Katie and I found at the New Castle Farmer's Market last year. I used a one-step crackle medium on their heads and hands; to give them a warm, aged appearance.  Their (rather dapper) paper collars are made from heavy card stock that is coffee-stained.  They stand on stenciled and distressed checkerboard pattern wooden bases. They are (from left to right): Huppert, Sascha, Gottfried, Rafael, and Otto.  (take a bow, boys!)  Blessings, Daryle
