The Story Begins... The Long Forgotten Folk of Nonesuch Creek!

Not far from Woodstown Whimsies… lies a place called Nonesuch Creek.  Our story begins there on a damp, drear morning in late, late April… the 30th to be exact!  The wind was driving the rain like a puppet-master; the emerging spring leaves were dancing without restraint, stately trillium bowed their crimson and white heads while the barely-visible fiddlehead fronds of the bracken fern quaked at the clap of thunder.

Mud underfoot as she trudged alone in the shadows of the swamp maples, one of the Stanton sisters emerged.  Etta stood shivering in the rain (soaked like a wet muskrat) along the banks of the now overflowing creek.

The youngest Stanton sibling, Woodruff… waited patiently for his sister to get into his little red boat.  The murky waters continued to rise; Woodruff remained steadfast. He had been gathering acorns; leftovers found underneath the decaying leaves of the Great Oak (few would have even ventured there).

Young Woodruff delighted in his boat-load of treasures! The rain persisted as they pushed off from the shoreline, unsure as to where the current might take them.

Perfect Night...for a Fire!

The air was cool, but not crisp... the day was behind us
and we settled in for a comfy little fire in the fire pit.
No smores... but dozens upon dozens of stars!
Sleep came easy...

Mum's Day Weekend...

Mother's Day weekend has come... and gone!
It was perfect weather here in South Jersey for
getting some annuals in the gardens.
This garden container was our "find" from last weekend...
we picked it up at a neighborhood yard-sale for $1
and then filled it with Chocolate Mint, Sage and Lobelia.

The colors on all of today's  pics are untouched...
the only tweaking done was for photo size and cropping.

Bethlehem Star...  prolific and naturalized in our area.

Coleus, Sweet Potato Vine and more Lobelia...
for our sun-to-shade backyard patio garden!

I told myself (and Katie) that I wasn't going to put
Hyacinth Bean in the flower gardens this year... Hmmmm!

This is our fourth or fifth year enjoying the Japanese Fern on
the northwest side garden... late day sun seems to agree with it.

The berm that runs along our backyard is covered with
Ivy and Vinca-minor... it has been blooming for weeks.

The Wood Violets are enjoying a "bumper-crop" year
here in South Jersey... naturalized and thriving.

Katie found a suet-hanger that just begged to be
filled with Hen-and-Chicks!

Again... untouched colors on this "Picasso" Petunia...
breathtaking beautiful!
(notice the lime green fringe border on the blossom)

Yup... it is just that "hot", it is called Cherry Hula and hangs
in a basket along with the Petunia... Wow!
Ahhhh.. almost time to sit back and enjoy the gardens
("Oh, the mulch, Daryle... spread the mulch!")

Encircled Enchantment!

Katie just completed her first "Living Wreath"...
(the "impostors" have found a home... see today's earlier post)

Ordinary "Hen & Chicks" take on an extraordinary beauty
encircled on sphagnum moss, some local moss and potting soil.

The early evening light catches the rich, warm earthen shades
of this time of the year, here in South Jersey...

Ahhhh... Those Scented Geraniums!

For years, my herb garden back in Vermont was filled with
a variety of scented geraniums... fragrant, flowering, and easy!
On a whim this spring, I have decided to introduce some
to our flower gardens here in South Jersey...
Some will be potted in terra cotta and some will take up
permanent residence in the garden soil.

Growing right alongside our brick patio... "Old Fashioned Rose Scented"
It is so fragrant, the scent lingers on your finger tips.

"Lady Plymouth Rose" is along the side garden that I put in
two years ago. This geranium has variegated, well-defined leaves.

This variety... "Cinnamon Geranium"
has much smaller leaves by comparison.

But the brilliant fuchsia flowers
more than make up for the diminutive leaves!

Ah... and then the "impostors!"

We found these "Hen and Chicks" at an Amish farm in
Lancaster County earlier this week... Katie is going to incorporate
them in a metal wreath ring with sphagnum moss.
(we will keep you posted on this one!)
Happy Gardening!

The Progression: From Paper Clay to Publication!

I couldn't be more delighted!
The summer 2014 issue of Prims (which is available May 1st)
is featuring my "Flying Folk Art Angel" on pages 126-129.

I thought it might be fun to post some "start-to-finish" pics!
This guy, like so many of my dolls...took on a life of his own.

Approaching Passover...

Last night, framed behind the branches of one of
our large Ash trees in the backyard...
the moon hung in the sky with a wide orange ring around it.
Approaching a full moon on Passover... in this week that we call Holy.
